Meet our people

Rajah Loatey, Mechanical Engineer, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services

When Rajah arrived with three A levels thinking he’d become an apprentice plumber, we asked him if he’d rather enrol on the BSC (Hons) degree in Building Services Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University.

The three year foundation scheme saw him working on site learning the practical side of mechanical engineering, in parallel with a block release course to learn the theory at Liverpool Community College.

During the three years he’s worked on prestigious projects including London’s famous Guildhall where he’s proud to have left his mark on one of the UK’s most treasured buildings.  Rajah took an additional year to study part-time at Liverpool John Moores University.
“The harder you work the more you get out of it,” says Rajah. “It’s great to see what you’re learning at college actually being put into practice on site.” He graduated in July 2009 and is currently tasked with the procurement of mechanical plant for two new schools projects in London. “I’m already responsible for spending hundreds of thousand of pounds of our clients’ money. There’s lots of hard work and I’m still learning, but with BBES, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.”
