Balfour Beatty Engineering Services has completed its .c £30m electrical services work over three hospitals in just two months at the Central Manchester Hospitals project.
Four new hospitals have been handed over by main contractor Bovis Lend Lease for Central Manchester & Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to replace the existing hospitals on the 44-acre city centre site.
The project included provision of electrical services for new heart, renal, adult, eye, womens’ and childrens' hospitals. Energy centres and a facilities management building also form part of the contract.
In a very tight schedule, around 200 electricians completed nearly 80% of the main hospitals block in the final two years of the 46 month contract, with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services delivering the project on time and within budget.
A mix of modularisation for containment, prefabricated brackets, modular wiring, plug and play distribution boards and conventional installation techniques were used on the project.
The project has won numerous safety awards including Bovis’ 2008 Project Safety Achievement Award, and RoSPA Gold Medal awards in 2007 and 2008.
Over 5,000 new rooms have been created for the 1400-bed hospital and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services has installed 170,000 metres of communication cabling and around 130,000 metres of power cabling. Despite the scale of the project, handover has been achieved with only five minor defects remaining due to restricted access at the site.
Congratulations to Stuart Campbell and his team for their excellent efforts in achieving hand over.
