Milton Keynes Academy secured practical completition on Monday 7th September 2009, to wide acclaim from staff and pupils.

The team at the Milton Keynes Academy Project achieved practical completion through great effort and teamwork from site, the project team and operatives. The project was the first in the country to be completed under the Partnership for Schools (PFS) Framework, successfully working throughout the project led to further works with Kier Marriott at Samworth Church Academy in Mansfield.

The Project was completed through a team approach with Kier Marriott, BDP and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, and provides a state-of-the-art Academy that replaces two schools in the local area.

The project embraced our philosophy of off-site prefabrication and manufacturing by utilising multi-service modules with an integrated building acoustic air path. Modular electrical systems were used for power and lighting with an innovative pre-wired powder coated trunking installed in classroom areas.  Plant was skid-mounted in the external energy centre utilising our off-site prefabrication factory, considerably reducing site build time.

The overall project value was £28 million, with BBES works valued at £5.7m. The Academy will house 1,550 students with 200 members of staff using the 12,900m2 of usable area. This will incorporate 50 teaching spaces including science and technology wings, a sports hall, performing arts area and extensive external teaching areas. By using controlled natural ventilation, biomass heat generation, PIR and daylight lighting controls, the Academy has been awarded a “Very Good” BREEAM Rating.

Our thanks extend to project manager Jon Hall, and area manager Steve Tovey for this achievement.
