Thameslink JV starts work on new cable route between Elstree and Borehamwood substation.

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services’ joint venture with Balfour Beatty Rail Projects continues with upgrade works to the power supply between Elstree and Borehamwood in North London. The works are in anticipation of the additional loading requirements for increased the power for the Thameslink Electrical and Power (E & P) project.

Power Systems division has started the 5km excavation and installation of 18 power cable ducts to house the new 25kV single core 800mm copper cable conductors that will carry the new power requirements to Borehamwood intake point.

“The project involves excavation along existing highways and arable land and the first milestone has just been reached by completing a section along a carriageway during the school holidays to reduce risk to pedestrians,” said project engineer Bill Newman.

The project started on 9th July 2009 and will take 18 months to complete. Safety is paramount and planning, local council and utility authority consents, and way leaves have all been rigorously placed and accepted to ensure the Zero Harm policy is conveyed to employees, the Thameslink team, the general public and local businesses. Consultations with those affected are taking place on a regular basis throughout the works.

The project is being managed through the joint venture core team from Network Rail’s offices in Southwark led by project director Arthur Roberts. Site works are being controlled through the Greenwich office by project manager Trevor Meakin.
