Balfour Beatty Engineering Services has been awarded a £3.2m contract by Barr Construction to supply and install mechanical and electrical services for the refurbishment of Carnegie Leisure Centre in Dunfermline.

Over a nine-month period Livingston office will oversee the replacement of all mechanical and electrical plant, and the refurbishment of three existing swimming pools. Work will also be carried out on the existing sports and changing facilities and mechanical and electrical services will be provided for a new café and multi-purpose fitness studios.

The project will make use of latest solar panel technology to provide heating for the training pools.  Re-engineering and procurement is underway and the site team is currently working closely with the consultant RSP to develop the following innovations:

  • Plant areas - prefabricated skids to be utilised so that major items of plant are piped-up and fitted off-site.
  • Chiller plant reviewed with a view to utiling latest technology to reduce chiller size and energy consumption over the life of the building.
  • Continue partnership with Remploy to provide prefabricated lighting and MICC fire leads for project.
  • Use of prefabrication to reduce man-hours worked on-site and in turn reduce risk of accidents and improve quality.
  • Introduction of limited modular wiring as client’s specification is traditional.

One of the main focuses for the project team will be to enable our hourly paid operatives to take greater responsibility for their works and their part in making the project a success with a target of zero defects and Zero Harm.

Fife Council owns the centre and is investing £17.2m to deliver modern sports and leisure facilities for the community.  This is the first contract that the Livingston office has worked with client Barr Construction for some time and the team is working closely with the Barr site team headed by Danny Matheson to ensure that this is the first of many successful contracts.
