Work is well under way on SSR Package 1B of Power Systems’ project for London Underground’s Metropolitan Line. The site has been set up at Preston Road and design work has started on 11 substations and seven cable routes.

Substation and cable designs are complete for the first batch of sites and major items of switchgear have been manufactured, ready for the installation works in January 2010.

Mike Nutbrown, construction manager, said: “We have been able to use a road closure by Thames Water on one of our cable routes through west London and work back-to-back with them to minimise disruption in the area.”

Cable containment works are nearing completion on four substation sites with teams moving onto another two sites in December. Over 1,500 brackets have been installed on the cable routes in preparation for the 11kV power cables that are being manufactured for delivery during 2010.

Project director, Lloyd Woodey, said: “2010 will be a very busy year on the 34 month project where we will install 11kV, DC, LV switchboards, transformer rectifiers and battery systems as well as intricate cable changeovers in live substations whilst keeping the railway in operation.”
