The Tameside construction joint venture team, comprising Balfour Beatty Engineering Services and Balfour Beatty Construction, recently successfully handed over the EMI ‘Etherow’ building on programme. The building provides special care to older adult patients and comprises 48 private bedrooms with en-suite facilities, a day-care unit, offices and gardens in addition to specifically designed areas for patients with dementia.
The team worked closely with the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust to develop the design to suit the specific needs of the patient group, including robust fit-outs and sanitary ware and intuitive graphics on signage.
This is the first of two clinical buildings which are being constructed as part of the PFI development with Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Gillian Parker, trust project director (Health Investment in Tameside) said: “We are delighted to have taken handover of this excellent building which marks the successful completion of the first of the two clinical buildings of this important development. It is a remarkable achievement for the ‘Health Investment in Tameside’ project and everyone involved should be congratulated. This phase was completed within budget and on time.”
This builds on the success of three previous handovers that were completed on time. In addition, three ProCure21 schemes have been successfully completed in Tameside namely a multi-storey car park, new pathology facility and the refurbishment and extension of a mental health facility.
The JV team is already preparing for the next challenge, which is the handover of the main acute hospital and diagnostic and treatment centre. This is currently on programme for an October 2010 handover.
