Work progresses on the new cable route works between Elstree and Borehamwood substation, part of the Thameslink Joint Venture with Balfour Beatty Rail.
As part of the increase in capacity of the power supply for the Thameslink electrical and power (E&P) project, the upgrade of the power supply between Elstree and Borehamwood in North London continues.
Power Systems Traction unit has completed the duct route in the road route areas – approx 3.5 km of excavation and installation of 18-way power cable ducts whilst directional drilling and excavations continue in the arable sections.
The installation of the new 25kV single core 800mm copper cable conductors that will carry the new power requirements to Borehamwood Intake point has started and over two weekend possessions we have installed 9km of cable.
The project started on 9 July 2009, and despite the problems with weather (ice, snow and flooding) in December and January and restrictions on road closures, works are on course to complete by end 2010.
We have achieved this through close liaison with the client and other stakeholders via a successful recovery programme and good communications.
Works are being managed through our JV with Balfour Beatty Rail by project director Arthur Roberts, from our co-located offices with Network Rail at Southwark in London.
