Thameslink JV Update

Works are well underway on the DC power upgrade works for Network Rail under the Thameslink E&P contract with design and build of modular switchgear and trackside connections.

Power Systems’ Traction unit works comprise the design, build, install and commission of an upgraded DC system based on rail system modeling carried out by Network Rail, to establish whether conceptually there is a need for power upgrade or injection.

The switchgear is designed to be installed and delivered in off-site manufactured, pre-tested modular housing, meeting the project requirement to minimise service interruption, by limiting possession requirements. The manufacturing is carried out at our Glasgow manufacturing facility.

Project engineer Craig Sharp expands, “Whilst manufacture is being carried out we manage the associated civil works, foundations, fencing etc, and the cable route works - post route or troughing - and cabling to connect the module to the track.

We have just delivered the first of four modules at Clayton Tunnel North, whilst proceeding with design and procurement at other locations.”

Detailed design and procurement is underway for three other locations whilst civil preparatory works are underway at two locations.

The successful execution of the project will be a significant achievement for the Power Systems teams demonstrating opportunities for collaborative working between Group Companies and Network Rail.
