Power Systems Traction unit is a year into the SSL Package 1B on the Metropolitan line and works are progressing well, having achieved all programme milestones to date. Construction has started at nine of the eleven substations, and on all 11kV cable routes.

The manufacture of new electrical equipment for the substations is continuing with a number of switchgear boards available for delivery to site. Substation civil designs are being finalised and works have started on site with the re-enforcement of substation floors to allow equipment deliveries and assembly.

Highway route works have been completed ahead of programme and 1800 meters of cable installed and joint. Trackside containment works are 50% complete and the first series of cabling trains have run successfully, installing 11kV cable trackside during engineering hour night shifts.

Bill Naismith, unit director adds “The key to the success of the first year of the project has been detailed planning and organisation, which has allowed installation of new equipment without impacting on the operational railway.

Congratulations to project director Lloyd Woodey and his team on this key milestone achievement.”
