
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) will act as principle contractor to Central Networks for the construction of the new 33/11kV Spring Gardens substation and demolition of the old Comet Bridge substation.
Remote end protection works at Shrewsbury substation also form part of the scope of works. This new substation will facilitate the construction of a new housing estate in the Shrewsbury area for Persimmon Homes, and at the same time replace a number of overhead lines with underground cables.
The works include the construction of a new 33/11kV substation with a five-metre high perimeter wall, two off transformer bays, 11kV switch room and associated control and protection systems.
BBES will project manage, design, supply, deliver, install and commission 33/11kV protection and control interfaces with the power transformers and switchgear being free issued by Central Networks. Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions will deliver all overhead line and high voltage cable works which includes the installation of new 33kV underground cables under the River Severn, to allow the old tower line to be removed. Alpha Construction Ltd will design and build all civil works.
The project will be managed from the BBES Redditch office, with support from the project teams in Newcastle and Sunderland. Reece James will oversee BBES operations on this contract from the project start in June 2010 through to its completion in July 2011.
