Power Systems, ESI unit has been awarded a £2.3m contract by Scottish Power Energy Networks to design, manufacture, supply and install new 275kV GIS switchgear in a reduced site footprint, including civil works at Whitehouse substation, close to the centre of Edinburgh.
The contract forms part of Scottish Power Energy Networks’ plans to replace the Whitehouse 275/33kV Super Grid Transformers (SGT) due to their poor condition. This work is closely linked to other ongoing activities for the reconstruction of Dewar Place 275/33kV substation, a key substation in the centre of Edinburgh, and the replacement of the 275kV cables feeding Whitehouse and Dewar Place from Kaimes substation.
The location of Whitehouse substation is in a sensitive residential area and particular care has been taken in the design of the substation to minimise the impact of the refurbished substation on the area in future.
BBES is undertaking the full project management, design, decommissioning, dismantling and removal of existing equipment and the supply, installation and commissioning of new GIS switchgear, ancillary equipment and civil works for the contract.
Planning and design work is primarily complete and site work is now underway and will be complete in April 2011.
