Under the Thameslink Framework, our JV of Balfour Beatty Rail (BBR) and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has been awarded the commission for detail design and build of a new substation at London Bridge.
The substation will include a five panel 33kV board, two off 10 panel DC boards, two LVAC boards, two transformer rectifier units and associated LV transformers, SCADA, battery chargers and lighting and small power. The substation will replace an existing track paralleling hut and will be positioned next to under-track refurbished railway arches.
The location presents a challenge to be overcome, as the arches currently suffer from significant water ingress for which a prevention management solution has to be implemented prior to installation.
Works will be carried out by the Power Systems’ Traction unit, with the overall project management carried out by the integrated BBR/BBES core team under project director Arthur Roberts.
Unit director, Bill Naismith states: “The award of this commission for London Bridge to the JV is further indication of the confidence developed with Network Rail that we will deliver a commission on time, safely and within budget as demonstrated by those completed to date on the Thameslink programme.
“The required skill set has now broadened as the emphasis of the project has changed, reflecting progression from outline designs into detail design through to construction. We are committed to delivering the construction works safely and efficiently without interrupting the running railway environment. We are using the experience and knowledge of the JV to design out risk in as many design stages as possible.”
The project is due to be completed in early 2011.
