Balfour Beatty Engineering Services has recently been awarded a £4.7m mechanical and electrical services contract for a new school in Wiltshire.

The new Wellington Academy, which is the first of its kind in Wiltshire, will be a mixed, non-denominational secondary school which will enrol up to 1,250 students including a sixth form.  The students will be from all backgrounds, abilities, and faiths and the academy will specialise in foreign languages, business and enterprise. It is planned that up to 100 boarding places will be available.  As the academy has close affinity with the armed services, there will also be a shooting range on the site.

The academy is being sponsored by Wellington College, one of the UK’s co-educational independent schools and Prince Andrew is to become President of The Wellington Academy.

Working with client Kier Moss, BBES will complete the design and construction of all the mechanical and electrical services for the academy, boarding house, sports hall and extensive external areas.  The services include a controlled naturally ventilated system.   The primary heat source for heating and hot water is being provided by a biomass boiler, there will be a controlled high efficiency lighting system with the boarding house containing solar collectors.  The project is anticipated to achieve a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating as a result of these and other innovations.
