Balfour Beatty Engineering Services’ Sellafield Product and Residue Store (SPRS) team is celebrating having successfully handed over the project to the client two months ahead of schedule.

The £36m contract has set new standards for work in the nuclear sector with many notable successes including 650,000 man hours worked without a reportable accident and completion of the project below the initial budget.

At the height of the works a team of 230 BBES staff and subcontractors were working on the project providing HVAC, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation services for the SPRS which is now a national asset for the safe secure storage of nuclear materials produced as a result of the reprocessing operations carried out at Sellafield.

The main building work started in 2005 with BBES starting on site in 2007 for a two and a half year period. During this time the BBES team installed enough cable to reach from London to Paris.

BBES operations director Ray Clements said: “This project has proved to be a wonderful example of team work. Providing multi-disciplinary services in such demanding and controlled circumstances is a challenge for any contractor, and our performance has been nothing but outstanding. We’ve delivered a project that has gone beyond expectations and has set a new benchmark for our industry."

Sellafield Ltd’s project management director Bill Condon stated: "I would like everyone to join me in congratulating the SPRS project team on the successful delivery of this significant project."

A celebration night will be attended by the team in July to mark the completion of the works.
