Patients began moving into Britain’s biggest new super hospital on the 16th June as the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham opened its doors for the first time.

The first major section to open was the emergency department, which began receiving patients from 2.00am. The new department replaces the old A&E facilities at Selly Oak Hospital.

Friday the 18th June saw around 550 patients transfer from the Selly Oak Hospital into the new 137,000sq m building making it one of the largest patient moves to have ever taken place in Europe.

The 1,200-bed hospital will serve as a major trauma centre for the West Midlands and as a centre of excellence for burns, cancer and transplantation. The hospital will also be the primary treatment receiving centre for Britain’s injured military personnel.

The £580m joint venture with Balfour Beatty Construction has been a huge team effort and has used hundreds of off-site manufactured building services modules supplied by Modular Systems + to enable it to complete ahead of schedule.

Peter Spearing, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services’ project director said: “We were even able to handover additional areas of critical care for the Trust as they needed the shock rooms for their opening, and the efforts of the team in getting these areas ready at short notice were magnificent. The new hospital looks fantastic and the team can be rightly proud of what they have achieved here.”
