Balfour Beatty has signed a £460m contract with BAA, which will see BBES deliver the mechanical and electrical services for the second phase of a satellite building to support Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2.

The T2B project is being delivered through an integrated team approach using the capabilities and expertise of Construction Services UK companies’ Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern, Mansell, Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services and Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering together with the professional services capability of Parsons Brinckerhoff.

As part of the Balfour Beatty team BBES will supply, install, test and commission all M&E installations which include public health services and all airport operation systems such as safety and security, information communication, lighting control,  building management, and a supervisory control and data acquisition system. Passenger lifts, escalators and conveyors also form part of the contract.

BBES operations director Andrew Thompson says around 300 M&E tradesmen will be required to work on the project at the peak of the works, supported by around 55 BBES staff employees as part of the integrated team. He explains: “We have already successfully delivered the first phase of T2B, with a zero accident frequency rate, ahead of programme, within budget and to the satisfaction of the client.

“We have an extensive innovative modularisation programme, which includes structural steelwork integration of risers, modularised plant rooms and information communication systems rooms where appropriate. We anticipate installing approximately 850 modules, with a combined length of around 4km, plus modular wiring, supplied by Modular Systems +."

This second phase of T2B will deliver 10 new aircraft gates east of Terminal 1 and incorporate an underground link from the satellite to the main building of the new Terminal 2 development. A large baggage facility will also be provided.

This new contract follows the successful delivery of the first phase of T2B bringing the total value of Balfour Beatty work to £592m.
