Kier North East has appointed Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) to design, supply and install the mechanical, electrical and public health services for Northumberland Academy’s Josephine Butler Campus.
The new campus will replace the existing Hirst Schools bringing the infant, junior, SEN, secondary and sixth form together in a new 20,000sq m facility, which will accommodate around 2,000 staff and pupils.
Sports and recreational facilities will include an athletics track, rugby pitch, games courts, gardens, play areas, hydrotherapy pool and 12 football pitches embracing the legacy left by local football heroes Jackie Milburn and Jackie and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Valued at £6.45m the contract includes provision of eco friendly installations such as rain water collection, automatic lighting control to save energy and biomass boilers fuelled by wood chips sourced from the Northumberland forest plantations.
Off-site prefabrication will be provided by Modular Systems + and will include multi service modules, plant skids and packaged pre-wired air handling units. The M&E services design on the 16 month contract is being undertaken by BBES’ Newcastle office.
