Projects division has been awarded a £1.1m electrical infrastructure contract for the Novar Two Wind Farm project in the hills of the Novar Estate in Ross-shire, north of Inverness.
The 16-turbine wind farm is an extension to the existing development and is the second project awarded to Balfour Beatty Engineering Services by RWE Npower Renewables, following the successful delivery of An Suidhe Wind Farm near Inverary (pictured).
The 13-month electrical project will see 16 turbines erected with each turbine capable of generating 2.3 megawatts (MW) giving a combined generating capacity of up to 36.8MW. The project will produce enough green electricity to meet the average demands of 15,500 homes.
The electrical works comprise the provision of analytical design reports, the complete cabling infrastructure, including the 33kV fibre and earthing networks, building services as well as ancillary and auxiliary equipment in the switchgear building.
Operations director Alan McCann said: "The award of this second project with RWE Npower Renewables will further establish our good working relationship with a valued customer. We set out to deliver a successful project at An Suidhe through close team working and cooperation with our customer. We managed to achieve this and we will carry this forward onto the Novar Two project."
Our main challenges on the project will centre around the harsh winter weather and environment that the project will be delivered in. Our experienced renewables team will continue its no compromise approach to safety, remaining vigilant to surrounding conditions, whilst going the extra mile to deliver this project.
The Novar Two site benefits from a number of features that make it excellent for a wind farm extension, including high wind speeds, excellent road and site access as well as being a good distance from existing properties.
The local communities of Ardross, Alness and Kiltearn also benefit from an annual community fund which is generated by the wind farm and is thereafter shared between and managed by them. This community fund has supported a wide range of local groups and activities, including schools, youth groups and sports clubs.
