Balfour Beatty Engineering Services has just started work on a £3.3m contract to refurbish Meridian Court, a seven-storey office building in Glasgow.

The eight-month project will see a full internal refurbishment and fit-out of the 5,865sq m building for NHS National Services Scotland to accommodate the relocation of approximately 500 staff from five existing locations.

The building, located in Cadogan Street, was formerly the headquarters for the Scottish Executive but has been unused for the past year. BBES will carry out a full mechanical and electrical fit-out, including low impact installations such as daylight linking lighting controls, seasonal commissioning and inverter-driven motors.

Many of the installations will be prefabricated modules, and pre-flexed luminaires will be included in the scheme. For increased efficiency, existing switchgear and boiler house plant will be retained and re-used along with sub-mains cabling and pipe work in the main risers.

Project manager, Barrie MacKenzie said: “The project requires close co-ordination with others working at the site. Our access to each floor will be limited as Sharkey, the main contractor, carries out demolition and strip out work on each level.”

When complete, NHS National Service Scotland will use the majority of the building with levels five and six planned for sub-letting to another tenant.
