Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has just completed work on the £46.3m Aneurin Bevan Hospital for Blaenau Gwent in Wales, adopting the ‘soft landings’ approach to make it one of the smoothest handovers to a client ever made on a BBES project.

The team handed over the BBES £11.3m project on 13 September as planned. Senior project manager Sean Harvey said: “We’ve worked very closely with the client and main contractor BAM Construction to ensure there have been no surprises. Our commissioning team has paid close attention to liaising and communicating with everyone very early in the process, so they have confidence in their new facilities.”

“It’s all about customer service,” says Sean, “Very often, clients complain about not understanding or being able to use their new systems but embracing the ‘soft landings’ approach means BBES will stay involved with the project beyond practical completion and is on hand to help the customer during the first few months of operation to take care of any snags and make sure the customer is confident in using the new systems.

BAM has commended BBES’ work and Karen Jones, project director for Aneurin Bevan Health Board said they are delighted with their new hospital: “The new All Wales framework under Designed for Life to deliver world class services in the NHS in Wales has presented a big opportunity and challenge for the Health Board, its Consultants and the SCP.  Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, as part of the supply chain, has demonstrated a collaborative and inclusive approach to working with the Health Board’s project team.

“The Balfour Beatty Engineering Services team members have been an integral part of our team always professional, approachable and open to information sharing ensuring a positive learning experience for the Health Board.  We have been very pleased to have them on board.”

The development of Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, Blaenau Gwent’s new Local General Hospital, started in 2008.  Named after the founder of the National Health Service, the hospital opened to the public on 11 October bringing improved and modern health services closer to the local community. It will be the first hospital in Wales where all patients will have single bedrooms with en-suite facilities.
