CEMARS Accreditation

BBES Power Systems, ESI, has just received CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme) accreditation, recognised in major economies world-wide as the common standard for carbon reduction.

The accreditation recognises Power Systems’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

To gain the certification, ESI has undertaken a rigorous analysis of areas such as utilities use, business travel, freight and plant fuel and identified key areas for action to increase efficiency and achieve carbon reduction.

BBES environmental engineer, Andy Muir, has worked closely with Achilles, which operates the scheme in the UK. He said: “It’s quite staggering how much carbon we produce. For example, our analysis shows that in 2009 we created 249 tonnes of carbon through our use of electricity alone. We also created 281 tonnes through our use of fleet and hire cars, and 204 tonnes of carbon through business air travel. The figures speak for themselves and it is now our job to identify how we can lower these emissions”.

As part of the assessment process, ESI were externally audited by Achilles to ensure accuracy of the data collected and the methodology used. Last year, for every million pounds of turnover, Power Systems ESI generated 23.1 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2, a significant Greenhouse Gas) which in turn equates to 3.37 tonnes of CO2 per each full time employee.

Managing director of Power Systems, Mark Griffiths, said: “We are delighted to have achieved this accreditation which reflects our pledge to minimise the consequences of our operations on the environment. The accreditation will help us to really make a difference as individuals and as a company, not just in how we operate, but in making the services and products we supply to our clients as sustainable as we can. The work doesn’t stop here, though, we must all continue to minimise our carbon emissions for the scheme to provide a long-term solution.”

Three of Power Systems’ largest customers participate in the CEMARS scheme. They are Scottish and Southern Energy, National Grid and E-On with other key customers likely to follow suit in 2011. As such then, it is a significant achievement for Power Systems ESI to have achieved this accreditation at such an early stage.
