Following earlier project successes, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has been awarded two further projects with a combined value of £7.5m as part of the Islington Schools for the Future scheme. London and South East Schools will carry out mechanical and electrical services to Islington Arts and Media School of Creativity and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language Centre schools.
Islington Arts and Media School of Creativity (IAMS) will be transformed using a combination of new building (45%), remodelling/change in use (45%) and refurbishment (10%). Facilities will include a new flexible performance space, new arts and music rooms with video editing suite and radio studio, a new enlarged dining area and dedicated adult learning centre.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language Centre (EGA) is a secondary school for girls with languages as a specialism. The new build school will include a performance space and lecture theatre, sports hall, multi-purpose and specialist language classrooms, central piazza with views down to St Pancras. BBES is providing mechanical and electrical services to this new build school on an existing site.
Mike Jennings will be the operations director responsible for the design, supply and installation of M&E services.
Innovative installations being rolled out on this project include prefabricated services in the energy centre and boiler-rooms, utilising existing service risers/routes and managing the design to provide a workable installation.
Sustainability solutions that will be incorporated include the provision of biomass boilers, natural ventilation to classrooms and heat recovery solutions to comfort conditions.
