Building Services South has secured over £10m with two contracts awarded as part of the Greenwich Phase 2 BSF scheme, in joint venture with Balfour Beatty Construction.

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has been awarded the projects, following the successful involvement with Phase 1, for ultimate client London Borough of Greenwich and the contracts involve the design, supply and installation of mechanical and electrical services, both of which are a mixture of new build and refurbishment.

Plumstead Manor School involves the provision of a performing arts centre (pictured) including recording studio and four drama rooms, a sports centre and a sixth form and vocational block which will include a state-of-the-art cyber café . These facilities will also be used by the local community and will have full special needs access.

Eltham Hill School is 80% new build and 20% refurbishment. The new build involves the provision of a learning resource centre, teaching rooms, dining facilities, ICT suites, music, drama and a new sports building (and pitches).

Sustainable initiatives being adopted on the two schools include:

  • The installation of double glazed window units including solar film on south facing elevations.
  • At Plumstead, the installation of a ‘green roof’ on the new performing arts and sports block with a plant called Sedum. This will improve heat and sound insulation, reduce air pollution, slow water run-off and prolong the life of the building.
  • The installation of biomass boilers to maximize the low carbon benefits from operating the plant in lieu of gas boilers.

Both projects are due for completion in the summer 2013.
