Projects division has been awarded the contract for an additional 75 turbine extension to Whitelee Wind Farm.

Civil works will be carried out by a joint venture of John Sisk and Son Limited and Roadbridge, as the main contractor for the Whitelee Extension Wind Farm development in East Ayrshire, for ultimate client ScottishPower Renewables.

Whitelee is already Europe’s largest onshore wind farm and will receive a boost of more than 200MW with the additional 75 turbines that are to be installed. This extra generating capacity will be connected to the National Grid in 2012.

Works will include the construction of access roads, substation and control buildings, and the wind turbine generator bases, which will be fitted with turbines by Alstom. A total of 1 million m3 of rock will need to be extracted during the work.

Located to the south west of the existing Whitelee Wind Farm, the 75 turbine extension will increase the generating capacity of the wind farm to 539MW, enough to power the equivalent of up to 300,000 households.

BBES will carry out the full electrical infrastructure works associated with the wind farm extension and potential customer options to provide switchgear and 33kV cabling.

Bill Jolly will manage our operations on site, and says, “We are delighted to have secured this contract and look forward to contributing to the success of this prestigious renewable project.”

Alan McCann, regional director added, “Following BBES’ involvement in successfully delivering the original Whitelee Wind Farm, we are again very proud to play our part in delivering the country’s renewable targets.

“It currently covers 55sq km of Eaglesham Moor, near Glasgow, and has 140 turbines which can generate 322MW of electricity; enough to power 180,000 homes.”

Works started on site in November and will be completed in the spring of 2012.
