After the successful delivery of the Phase 1A project, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES), Power Systems division has been awarded the £3.2M power contract on the London overground extension to Clapham.
The works comprise a new 1.3 km rail link from the existing Network Rail lines at Old Kent Road to existing East London Lines at Surrey Quays.
The Traction unit will design, install, test and commission services to meet the power systems requirements for the new rail extension.
This will include a new track paralleling hut linking six traction roads, traction 3rd rail power system, signalling supplies, points heating, SCADA, EMC and stray current compliance, and system wide earthing and bonding.
The design team for the project will be based in the Huntly Road office, project management being undertaken from the Greenwich office.
The project incorporates complex systems engineering requirements, underpinning the interface and coordination with the civils and signalling systems contractors and the integration with the existing NR and ELL operational railways.
Design work started in February 2011, with early construction planned for October 2011. The main construction will take place in February 2012, through to commissioning in June 2012.
