Building Services North, Warrington office has been awarded two schools within the Oldham Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, valued at £10.5M.

Construction will start during March on the new-build Oldham Roman Catholic School and the partial rebuild and remodelling of North Chadderton School.

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) will design, supply and install mechanical and electrical services to both schools, for ultimate client Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council.

Services installed by BBES include CHP systems, natural and mechanical ventilation systems, domestic hot and cold water systems, above ground drainage systems, a fully interactive BMS system, modular wiring systems, fire alarm, security and access control systems.

Both Oldham RC and North Chadderton require compliance with building regulations Part L 2010 contributing to new advancements in sustainable technologies.

BBES innovation that will be used on this project will include bespoke multi service modules to suit the buildings steel frame structure which have been designed with pre-formed openings to enable M&E services to be routed through. The project teams are also involved in early design reviews with both RPS Gregory and Arup to enable innovation to be driven out at an early stage of the design, with any health, safety and environmental issues addressed at design stage. A good example of eliminating, minimizing and mitigating the eight fatal risks through safety by design.

BBES sustainable aspects that will be incorporated include installation of rainwater harvesting systems and an interactive BMS system capable of lighting system zonal control. The schools are also fully energy metered via the BMS, which has the capability to convert consumption to cost and provide out of profile alarms for all systems metered.

All material waste disposals from site will be carried out in accordance with the North Chadderton and Oldham RC project specific sustainability plans.

Peter Davies will manage BBES’ operations on site, supported by Charlie McNamara, Glen Hankinson and the team. Works will start in the summer of 2011 and will be completed in the summer of 2012, in time for start of term.
