Building Services North has been awarded the £3.5m M&E contract for the new build Beatson Translational Research Centre (TRC).

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) is working with Mansell and ultimate client University of Glasgow to complete a new four-storey laboratory and office building with car parking and roof top plant.

Translational research is the process by which doctors and scientists translate their research in the laboratory into real therapies for cancer patients.

The Centre will specialise in the most common tumours and those that cause the most deaths in Glasgow such as endocrine (breast, prostate and ovaries), smoking-related (lung, throat and oral), and gastro-intestinal.

Mechanical and electrical services comprising full air conditioning, BMS controls, fume and MSC exhaust systems, RO water, medical gas systems, UPS and generator standby systems, small power and lighting will be supplied and installed.

Sustainability aspects to be included on this project include a high efficiency turbo chiller and air handling units with Econet heat recovery packages. Innovation adopted on this project includes off-site manufactured modular risers and prefabricated plant skids.

KJ Tait will provide M&E consultancy services on the project.

Works start on site in November and will be completed towards the end of summer 2012. Stephen Houston will manage BBES’ operations, supported by Gordon Cullen, Joe Reilly and Colin Telfer on site.
