Building Services North has been awarded a £2m M&E contract associated with the extension of the Tollcross Aquatics Centre, in readiness for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) will supply and install mechanical and electrical services on the extension of the 50 metre, six-lane warm up pool, which will also provide additional seating for up to 5,000 spectators. A new pool-side event control room, new fitness and health suites, an extension of the existing changing facilities, an upgraded café and a refurbishment of the existing centre will also be included.
BBES is working with Barr Construction to deliver the project for Glasgow City Council. Works start during October and will be completed towards the end of 2012.
M&E services comprise LV Switchgear and distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, lighting controls, small power, fire alarms, public address, voice/IT, TV ,ventilation systems, BMS system, heating and domestic water services.
Sustainability is incorporated into the building services installation through the use of a CHP unit and rainwater harvesting system. In keeping with the idea of a legacy for Glasgow from the commonwealth games BBES will support the local supply chain in terms of both subcontractors and suppliers.
From an innovation point of view the BBES site team is exploring opportunities through regular innovation workshops.
An early example of BBES positive approach to reducing risk on site will be the off-site fabrication of our high level areas which will greatly reduce the need for working at height and also remove any hot works.
John Irvine is the contract manager on this project, supported by Barrie MacKenzie and Gordon Ferguson.
The Tollcross Aquatic Centre will host the swimming competitions at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
