Leeds office has secured the £2.8m mechanical and electrical services contract for Birley Community College in Sheffield, a specialist centre for technology.

Awarded within the Sheffield BSF framework, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) is working with Vinci Construction UK to deliver this educational facility for Sheffield City Council.

The project consists of a large new building linked to a retained and refurbished three-storey block. This existing building will be remodelled in small areas to accommodate a kitchen and dining area and the new build will include a sports hall.

Aside from this retained building the remainder of the existing buildings will be demolished, making way for sports pitches and open space. A full ICT infrastructure refurbishment/ replacement will also
be installed at the school with new device provisioning throughout based on the schools strategic vision.

BBES will design, supply and install M&E services comprising lighting and power, fire alarms, data, heating, ventilation and domestic services.

Sustainability aspects to be implemented on this project include engaging the pupils in construction related design projects and football matches with college staff. The site waste management plan also includes the use of segregated skips.

Modular Systems + will support the project with prefabricated plant rooms, risers and main service routes.

James Mason is managing BBES’ operations on this project which started in July and is programmed for completion in spring 2013.
