Building Services North recently handed over the Sirius and Ganton Academy in Hull.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) provided £8.4m of mechanical and electrical services for the new £48.5m Sirius and Ganton Academy project which included a special educational needs (SEN) school along with a facility for the hearing and visually impaired. The school was successfully handed over on 18 August 2011 to Hull City Council.
The new academy which opened for the new term on 6 September 2011 has 1,590 pupils and 200 post-16 students. The first-class facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, multi-use sports pitches, impressive ICT facilities and separate sports centre.
Many sustainable initiatives were adopted on the state-of-the-art educational facilities including the use of local contractors, the employment of local apprentices and Princes Trust placements.
Darren Paice, contracts manager on the job said: “The project was the largest school we had ever delivered, and with such a tight programme the only way to succeed was to ensure that we all worked as a team. The strong relationship between BBES, Balfour Beatty Construction and Hull City Council continued throughout the project, and this shows in the delivery and quality of the building.”
