Building Services North has been awarded a £5.5m contract for the new Dunfermline High School in Fife, Scotland for client Bam Construction.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services will carry out the supply and installation of the mechanical and electrical services associated with the replacement environmentally-friendly 17,700sq m high school which is being built in the north-west corner of the current playing fields. The new school will have a projected occupancy of 1,750 pupils and will also be an excellent resource for the local community.
Sustainable initiatives include the use of solar panels, rainwater collection and 40% of the heating will come from renewable sources. There will be monitors in all classrooms to ensure a balanced supply of fresh air and a wind turbine on the campus will deliver electricity to the school. Water-saving devices will also be fitted and it is hoped that these methods will play an important role in the school achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
The new ‘green’ school which will include a sports hall, two gyms, dance studio, mini theatre workshop, library and conference accommodation reflects the design brief created by the students and staff with an environmentally-friendly building, fit for the 21st century being at the top of the list.
The project team started on-site in May; the contract is due for completion in May 2012. The ultimate client is Fife Council.
