The new wing at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy was handed over to NHS Fife and Consort on 28 October 2011, valued at £170m, with zero snags, on time, on budget and zero LTIs.
Ben Conway, Vice-chairman of NHS Fife, was presented with the keys to the building by Mike Peasland, CEO of Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK in a special ceremony onsite marking the completion of the construction of the new wing.
The handover signals the countdown to the opening of the new wing, with initial services scheduled to move into the building from mid-December.
Mr. Conway said, “I am delighted to accept the keys to the new wing - a facility which will provide a lasting healthcare legacy for the people of Fife, benefitting not only our patients today but the generations to come.”
As part of the handover ceremony, Balfour Beatty presented NHS Fife with a donation of £20,000 to be used for the purchase of play equipment.
The hospital comprises 31 departments including A&E, renal, infectious diseases and maternity delivery, 11 operating theatres, 2000 rooms and eight floors.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services carried out the mechanical and electrical services to the project.
Within the hospital there are 585 horizontal modules, 273 en-suite toilet pods, 27 prefabricated risers, 25km of modular wiring and 50km of pipe work.
At peak the overall project employed 86 staff, 500 operatives and 30 subcontractors, and the AFR to date is 0.04.
