Building Services South has been awarded a £1.5m contract to upgrade the cooling plant for the 275/400kV transmission cables in the London area.

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has been awarded this project by Electricity Alliance East, a partnership between National Grid and Balfour Beatty and one of six Electricity Alliances lead by National Grid formed to deliver a major investment programme to update and develop the high-voltage transmission network in order to maintain safe, secure and reliable electricity supplies across England and Wales.

A joint BBES team from both Power Systems and London and South East will combine to deliver the enabling builders work, design coordination, and process control equipment together with new switchgear, motor control centres, cooling pipe work and electrical services, and primary cooling plant and fans refurbishment.

Sustainability aspects on this project include energy monitoring and lighting controls and also reusing and refurbishment of existing equipment with up to date efficient speed control varying to demand.

The project combines the expertise of our building services south and power systems divisions, thus sharing knowledge of National Grid expectations with the challenges to deliver safely and ‘right first time’ into service, a fast track project whilst working within the confines of live 400kV substations.

Steve Waugh will carry out this section of the works supported by Duncan Hall who will lead all work for Electricity Alliance East on behalf of BBES. It is the first project to be delivered on a framework.

Works started in October and will be completed early 2012.
