Works are progressing well at the University of Leeds with 17 phases completed on time to the client’s satisfaction, with zero defects.
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES), Building Services North, East Region is working with the University of Leeds and Miller Construction to refurbish the Civil, Engineering and Mechanical Engineering blocks at its campus in Leeds. The university is currently undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment programme, which includes bringing the engineering buildings to present day standards with the replacement of all major plant and equipment.
The site team has been working since April 2011 on the multiple phases of the project within the challenging environment of a live university building.
To ensure continuity of services, particularly maintaining sensitive equipment in laboratories, extensive services surveys needed to be carried out to maintain supplies and isolate / changeover / strip out safely, etc.
A pre-requisite of the site induction is that all operatives working on site undergo a specific asbestos awareness training session. Noisy activities and material distribution are carried out during times that do not impact on the university’s operations. Also, the space on site is very restricted so deliveries and lifts are coordinated in advance with the client.
The team’s hard work, led by project manager Johnpaul Bolton, has led to BBES being presented with further opportunities with the University of Leeds and Miller Construction.
