Carillion Building has awarded Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) a £7m contract for mechanical and electrical services at HMP Low Moss in Glasgow.
The Scottish Government funded prison will have 700 cells for male prisoners and will employ circa 300 staff.
The overall cost for the development is around £100m and BBES’ scope includes work within the facilities building and gates building.
The facilities building houses the energy centre which supplies services to the entire site. BBES is also supplying services to the workshops, laundry and catering services which provide purposeful activity for the prisoners.
Eco-friendly installations include a combined heating and power system and it is hoped that modularised containment will be incorporated to reduce manpower and enhance safety as part of Zero Harm.
The site was formerly an RAF barrage balloon station used for World War II and later was modified to create a low security prison. The new HMP Low Moss will provide facilities to modern standards doubling the capacity of the original prison.
